Staying in a ryokan in Japan

Ryokans are traditional Japanese-style hotels that feature tatami mat beds, onsens (hot springs bath), and traditional Japanese food.

It’s quite unique and likely not that popular with foreigners – when we arrived were surprised to see that the inn staff barely spoke any English – but then the procedure is quite simple for everyone so we didn’t have much problem settling in. They provide everyone with traditional robes, and you’re free to roam the property and use public onsens and enjoy nature. Food in a ryokan is excessive – we did our best (and we can eat a lot of Japanese food) but never could finish the meal – and they have breakfasts, lunches, and dinners included.

All in all, it’s an unforgettable experience we recommend to everyone!
