Cooking experiences are (according to us) one of the best ways to absorb the culture of a new place and offer a unique opportunity to know locals and their traditions.
We had our first local cooking experience in Tokyo when we booked an okonomiyaki cooking class with a Japanese family on TravelingSpoon
We got to visit a family in one of the Tokyo neighborhoods, cook an entire lunch with multiple courses together, and then eat it and chat. And it wasn’t a special “cooking school” setup – though those can be quite interesting as well – we were in their “normal” house in their “normal” kitchen – the best way to immerse in the new culture.
Fun fact: did you know that in Japan people have a separate set of slippers to wear when entering the bathroom – and god forbid you trid to walk wearing them in the rest of the house?

Cooking experiences can also be a good way to entertain kids as they also actively participate and learn something new, and it’s definitely more fun than usual sightseeing 🙂
